Current U.S. Abortion Facts and Figures

  • In the last 20 years, states have enacted more than 660 restrictions on abortion (Wash Post).

  • Today, there are approximately 800 abortion clinics in the U.S. (Guttmacher Institute). (For comparison, there were nearly 3,000 abortion clinics in the U.S. in the early 1980s.) By contrast, there are more than 2,500 anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers.

  • 89% of all U.S. counties do not have a single abortion clinic, and seven states have just one (Guttmacher Institute).

  • Between 2011 and 2017, the South had a net decline of 50 clinics, and the Midwest had a net decline of 33 clinics (Guttmacher Institute).

  • In February 2019, President Trump banned Title X funding--which covers the costs of family-planning services for low-income patients--from supporting any organization that provides abortions or abortion referrals (NYT 2019).

  • In 2019, states collectively enacted 58 abortion restrictions, including 25 abortion bans. Due to Roe v. Wade, none of the bans, which cover 12 states, are currently in effect (Guttmacher Institute). This would change immediately if Roe were overturned.

  • While on the presidential campaign trail, Donald Trump promised to nominate a judge who would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. In October 2018, Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, replaced Justice Anthony Kennedy, who often had been a pro-abortion-rights swing vote (NYT 2018).
